About the role

Overview

Neo.Tax helps companies automate complex tax and accounting workflows by connecting data across project management, payroll, identity, and financial systems. We’re looking for a Solutions Engineer to help prospective and existing customers understand how Neo.Tax can solve their problems and fit into their technical environments.

This is a founding role—you will be the first solutions engineer ever hired at Neo.Tax! You’ll partner with Sales, Customer Success, Product, and Engineering to lead technical discovery, design credible solutions, deliver tailored demos and proofs of concept, build customer-specific integrations, and guide technical evaluations toward successful adoption. You’ll translate customer workflows and constraints into clear solution plans, communicate trade-offs honestly, and bring recurring needs back to the product team.

This is a customer-facing engineering role. You’re responsible for meeting customer needs, which often means building beyond demos and proofs of concept. When a customer needs something the product doesn’t support yet, you’ll build it at the integration boundary of our product (authentication, data ingestion, and connections to customer systems), and that work may ship to production. Product Engineering owns the product, including that boundary, and partners with you on reviews, handoffs, and longer-term improvements.

What you’ll do

Lead technical discovery with prospects and customers: understand their workflows, systems, goals, constraints, and evaluation criteria.

Deliver tailored product demos and technical walkthroughs that connect Neo.Tax capabilities to customer outcomes.

Design and explain solution architectures, data flows, and integration approaches across systems such as project management, code repositories, HRIS, payroll, ERP, and data warehouses.

Validate technical feasibility, data readiness, access requirements, and security or networking constraints; surface risks and dependencies early.

Build demos, prototypes, and proofs of concept to show value and de-risk evaluations.

Build customer-specific integrations at the edge of our product, including authentication and data ingestion. Work directly with customers to deliver solutions that meet their immediate needs and can operate reliably, then partner with Product Engineering on handoffs and longer-term improvements.

Partner with Sales to qualify technical fit, scope proposed solutions, respond to technical questions, and set clear expectations.

Support customer technical evaluations, including architecture reviews, security and IT diligence, and implementation planning.

Troubleshoot and resolve issues with the integrations you’ve built, in partnership with Product Engineering.

Hand off to Product Engineering when customer-specific work should become part of the core product, and partner with Customer Success to support adoption.

Share customer feedback and recurring requirements with Product and Engineering, helping distinguish one-off requests from opportunities for reusable product capabilities.

Create and improve reusable demo assets, reference architectures, technical documentation, and playbooks.

What we’re looking for

Technical and solution-design skills

Experience in Solutions Engineering, Sales Engineering, technical consulting, implementation, or another customer-facing technical role.

Strong technical fundamentals and the ability to reason about APIs, integrations, data flows, and enterprise software environments.

Comfort working with data-heavy workflows and evaluating data quality, mapping, and integration requirements; strong SQL (we use Postgres on Neon ) and proficiency in TypeScript and Node.js. Experience with NestJS or React is a plus.

Ability to assess technical feasibility and explain architecture, security, and implementation trade-offs without overpromising.

Production software engineering experience: you’ve written, shipped, and supported code that customers or other teams depend on. You can build a focused demo or proof of concept, and you can also build the version that runs in production.

Hands-on experience building integrations with third-party systems, including authentication (OAuth, SSO/SAML, API keys, service accounts) and large-volume data ingestion (pagination, rate limits, incremental sync, retries, validation).

Customer-facing and problem-solving skills

Excellent written and verbal communication with both technical and non-technical audiences.

Strong discovery skills: you ask focused questions, clarify what success means, and turn ambiguous needs into a practical solution plan.

Product sense and judgment to identify when a customer request is specific to one account versus representative of a broader need.

High ownership, sound follow-through, and comfort managing multiple evaluations and stakeholders.

Empathy for customer workflows and the ability to build trust through clear, accurate communication.

Nice to have

Experience supporting enterprise SaaS evaluations or complex, multi-stakeholder sales cycles.

Familiarity with accounting, tax, finance, fintech, or R&D workflows.

Experience with ETL/ELT tooling, data warehouses, or common enterprise platforms (ERP, HRIS, payroll).

Familiarity with AI/ML products and how to explain their capabilities, limitations, and data requirements.

Experience navigating enterprise security, privacy, compliance, or networking reviews, including SOC 2 environments or private-network requirements.

How you’ll be evaluated

Ability to quickly understand a customer’s domain, workflow, and technical environment.

Quality of technical discovery and the clarity and accuracy of proposed solutions.

Ability to deliver relevant demos and proofs of concept that help customers evaluate value and feasibility.

Quality and reliability of the integrations you build: correctness, error handling, observability, and how cleanly they hand off to Product Engineering.

Judgment in setting expectations, surfacing risks, and moving evaluations toward clear next steps.

Execution under constrained timelines: deliver a clear, technically sound evaluation and proof of value under customer deadlines without compromising accuracy or setting unrealistic expectations.

Communication and stakeholder management across customers and internal teams.

Quality of customer feedback and reusable materials that improve the product and future evaluations.

Working model

You’ll collaborate closely with Sales, Customer Success, Product, Engineering, and customer teams.

Expect a mix of customer-facing conversations, demo and evaluation preparation, and focused internal work.

You may occasionally travel for key customer engagements (frequency TBD).

Additional Details

Still interested? Here’s more about the opportunity and how this role can make an impact.

Why Join Now

A pivotal growth stage: Join as Neo.Tax scales its enterprise business and builds repeatable ways to support complex customer evaluations.

Meaningful customer impact: Help companies modernize costly, manual tax and accounting workflows with software and AI.

Enterprise customer exposure: Work with customers including Adobe, Block, Capital One, Mercury, Whoop, and Thomson Reuters.

Small team, big ownership: Shape how we qualify technical fit, demonstrate value, build the integrations that connect customers to Neo.Tax, and carry customer insight back into the product.

Greenfield opportunity: This is a founding role—you will be the first solutions engineer ever hired at Neo.Tax! Help develop the demos, proof points, and solution patterns.

Who You Are

Ownership-oriented: You keep evaluations moving, follow through on commitments, and make the next step clear.

A proactive communicator: You summarize what you heard, surface risks early, and ask clarifying questions instead of making assumptions.

Customer- and business-aware: You connect technical choices to customer outcomes and commercial priorities.

Pragmatic: You explain trade-offs and recommend a workable path rather than defaulting to a perfect-on-paper solution.

Comfortable with ambiguity: You can learn a customer’s environment quickly and make progress without a complete spec.

What It’s Like to Work Here

You’ll work across Sales, Customer Success, Product, and Engineering, with a direct line from customer conversations to product feedback and go-to-market improvements.

We’re remote-first and prefer time zones that can overlap with our San Francisco, CA headquarters. Key customer engagements may occasionally require travel.

We actively experiment with AI tools and workflows; we value using them to accelerate thoughtful work, not as a substitute for technical judgment.

A typical day may include preparing a tailored demo, leading technical discovery, building or debugging a customer integration, documenting risks and next steps, and sharing recurring customer feedback with the team.

What Success Looks Like in 90 Days

You understand Neo.Tax’s product, customer workflows, and the technical patterns that commonly come up in evaluations.

You can independently lead discovery and tailored demos for common use cases, clearly explaining fit, requirements, and limitations.

You’ve built or improved reusable demo assets, proof-of-concept approaches, or reference materials that help customers evaluate value and feasibility.

You’ve established strong working relationships with Sales, Customer Success, Product, and Engineering and provide clear, actionable customer feedback.

You’ve built at least one customer-specific integration that’s running in production.

Who Should Not Apply

People who want a purely internal engineering role and do not enjoy regular customer interaction.

People who need fully specified requirements before they can make progress.

People who overpromise, avoid surfacing risks, or struggle to explain technical trade-offs clearly.

People who treat every customer request as a one-off build instead of looking for repeatable product or solution patterns.

People who don’t want to write and support production code.
